Twenty-two hardy and brave souls turned up for the first of April's Newcomers Tournament at Waltham (only 8 were rated). I was delighted at the turnout and was able to accommodate three walk-ins and keep the division even.

Most impressive observations in no specific order: the attention my welcoming comments/basic directions received, the "playing within the spirit of the rules" I observed, and the great level of play.

Three Massachusetts School SCRABBLE® Championship 2000 (to be held 29 April in Boston) contenders decided to try their hand at an OWL tournament and they did marvelously. Since most of these junior high student's games are played in teams of two against two, it was great to see them handle with ease the challenges of playing alone and with a clock! (School SCRABBLE® players use egg timers.)

Twenty (out of 22!) players stayed for the awards ceremony, which we had to hold in the hotel's hallway to create space for the Premier division players (they had their 8th game of the day). I can't wait to host another Newcomer's Event!

Thanks to Michelle for all her help!
